On the site http://www.psrunner.com/ my best ad is the one to the right of the content (except on the home page) I should probably move it to the left side.

Looking at your site, I would say “try it”. As the post eludes to, there are a lot of factors and its the right “mix” that leads to the best profit. That is why testing is so key. I’m glad this has got you thinking.

Good tips though one of the suggestions you mentioned stuck out in my mind, where you called for an ad to ‘interrupt’ the reader. Now obviously I understand what you meant – that the ad should call enough attention to itself to catch the readers eye long enough to pass on it’s message – however it did put me in mind of those awful ads I see more and more of which actually expand to block the content should you accidentally roll-over them or worse, on page load. Word of warning to anyone thinking of doing those, you’re just as likely to enrage the reader as you are to get their attention IMHO.
